CAI faces several hundred pieces of state legislation annually, most of it designed to control or regulate community associations.
- 26 legislative action committees (LACs) work with Government & Public Affairs (G&PA) staff to represent members and monitor state legislative and regulatory issues such as foreclosure, construction defects, manager licensing, condominium and planned community acts and alternative dispute resolution.
- LACs proactively introduce legislation that supports the best interests of CAI members. The G&PA Committee recommends public policy positions to the Board of Trustees – positions that are used by LACs to develop strategy on legislative and regulatory issues.
- CAI also represents members on federal legislative and regulatory issues such as bankruptcy reform, terrorism insurance, inside wiring, toxic mold and flood insurance.
- CAI's amicus curiae program has been used to affect legal decisions and to establish pro-community association precedent in state appellate cases.
- The "Advocacy Center" on www.caionline.org allows members to track legislation in their states and to communicate directly with state and federal legislators.
